Blackout: Protest SOPA/PIPA

I normally would've wrote this but after reading Bobby Hundreds poignant plea, I decided to repost in solidarity. Stop the government from trying censor to the internet.

Today, a string of major websites are banding together to protest SOPA, a bill trying to work its way through Congress that is intended to stop online piracy. SOPA doesn’t sound so horrible, right? Online piracy is (fun but) bad! (No, I know I know, it’s awesome, but come on guys, it’s bad). The movie studios and media guys are super stoked on it because they’re tired of freeloaders burning and ripping off all their hard work. They’ve BEEN tired: In fact, here in the States, they already have a law to keep people from doing that (it’s called the DMCA), so now they want to fight the assholes doing it overseas. Vile crooks like Pirate Bay and bloodsucking bit torrent leeches that Americans like you (and, well, me (shh don’t tell anyone)) visit to download all our (I mean, YOUR) illegal movies and music. The bill states that to defeat international bootleggers, we must keep all of our search engines and Youtubes and websites from showing them any love.

There’s a slight problem with SOPA, however. The way it’s written – which is not very well – makes it so that the people creating original content (the studios, etc.) have far-reaching, unbridled, free reign to take out anyone who they have a “good faith belief” is stealing their stuff. That’s all they need. A good faith belief. And you’re dunzo! It’d be like if I had a “good faith belief” that you stole my Adam Bomb snap-back so I got to stab you in the ribcage and neck and upper-chest area (and then went home and realized it was in my closet the whole time).

I’m making it sound a lot simpler than it is, but the moral of the story is this. SOPA, although paved with good intentions, is the road to hell. The Internet, for all its benefits and burdens, is built upon freedom – free information, free thought, free expression – and by blocking content under something as vague as “good faith beliefs,” SOPA falls nothing short of censorship. What’s worse, SOPA makes it difficult, if not impossible, for small web-based companies and brands like ours to exist and survive. So much of The Hundreds’ reality is based on taking advantage of the web’s open frontier. Imagine if I posted a video with an unlicensed song playing in the background and got shut down for it. And then consider that I’ve already done this, whether knowingly or unknowingly, countless times in the past year. Imagine how I could’ve written this entire essay without “stealing” everything I learned off of other websites and blogs. Imagine. Imagine there’s no pizza.

The fact of the matter is that Ben and I should support SOPA. After all, that’s what we do – create original content. Just like the movie studios and record labels who want to hump SOPA and have like 10,000 of its babies. We agree – it totally sucks when people rip us off or bootleg our product, ideas, and intellectual property without our permission. But for one, we believe in the DMCA, which is already doing a pretty good job of blocking pirated content. For two, we think the SOPA should be re-worked, clarified, and not rushed with reckless abandon when even the White House is bummed on it. And for C, we kinda like how the Internet is. For the most part, this is the new world disorder and it’s time that the SOPAtriarchs got used to it, got creative, and got over it. How many times do we have to go over this? STOP TRYING TO FIGHT THE INTERNET.

Fresh n Hot straight out tha Pot.

A lot of people have been asking a combination of one of three questions recently: When are new clothes are going to be released? Why don’t I update this blog anymore? And when are new clothes going to be released?

So here are some friendly answers for the fine folks at home to the best of my ability. I've been working diligently on creating new 2012 Spring, Summer & Fall clothes and overhauling the website for 2012. Since I design the shirts myself, we are little behind schedule, but I can tell you that we have been hard at work crafting some of the most pure unadulterated design funk to have ever touched the Grits namesake. In all seriousness, whatever I’ve done for Grits before, is far eclipsed by what we’re throwing around right now. Collections usually get thrown together at the last second because well…because all of you start complaining, I feel bad, throw something together and get it out for the Gang. However, with my new found ability to take time to release clothing, that means the quality and overall presentation of things are just getting ridiculous. I know that no one wants to wait, and that I’ve said this hundreds of times on these digital pages, but trust me. This is worth waiting for.

Monday Musing: Not Your Average

It was a couple of years ago something in my head snapped. I had grown tired of producing "pretty" insipid work on the computer to pay the bills; the late nights and tight deadlines tied to a Mac on autopilot had begun to mess with my mind.

I kept seeing a recurring daydream of a younger me - standing in the garden at the house I grew up in with pens and pencils instead of fingers as my hands, and a big smile on my face. It reminded me of why I had started making pictures in the first place, because it was fun!

That is why I started Grits, to keep the fun in my life though making pictures that were true to making me happy.

I found a different kind of passion for Life and Art that I've always known existed but seem to have forgotten in the social fabric of mediocrity.

Then one night while drawing at my desk, it hit me... At some point in life - people have to come to the realization that they march to the beat of their own drum. Normal doesn't quite describe these folks who often try desperately to fit in, but fail miserably.

There comes a time when we are forced to embrace the self-realization that breaking away from normal is actually a good thing.

Success is not defined by how well we fit in with "the crowd", but actually how we inspire those around us.

Inspiration: Fried Grits

Today's post is from fellow blogger, Jeff Jeffords, he writes a encouraging blog called Fried Grits. I've been following him for a while and love his anecdotes. Check this one out about Fried Grits.

I love grits. I’m talking about legitimate grits that Grandma simmers to perfection and lovingly seasons with butter, salt and cheese. Grits go best with bacon, eggs, fresh fruit and steaming hot coffee. Grits are certainly a substantial dish. It’s no mistake that the term grit interchangeably defines fine granules and determination. For years, my Grandma Jeffords has recycled leftover grits into tasty fried grit cakes. Grandma chills the grits in the fridge then dices them into bite size chunks and fries them in an iron skillet. Fried grits convert a hearty dish into bite-size portions. For me, fried grits represent the incremental, hearty investments that Grandma consistently made into my life.

Like Grandma says; “grits stick to your ribs.” For as long as I can remember, Grandma has been relentless about feeding her family, and feeding them well. While I was in college, I would often call Grandma on Sunday afternoons to catch up. One of the questions that she would inevitably ask me is, “are you drinking enough milk”? The question always made me smile, but it turned out that this was actually a brilliant question. She didn’t badger me about what my major was or how my grades were, but because of her relentless sincerity, I didn’t want to disappoint her. She was influencing me to do my best. Like always, she was steadily reflecting Jesus and cultivating grace in my heart.

Throughout my life, I’ve observed a remarkable capacity within my Grandmother to renew her mind and maintain her focus on the important things. The substantive stuff that sticks to your ribs and establishes character. Through the ups and downs within the lives of children, grandchildren and great grand children, she has always been a steadfast presence. Her home is like an anchor that renews your mind and challenges you to be a man or woman of substance. It takes some life experience to truly appreciate that.

Achieving our goals has everything to do with establishing the right foundation through a consistent, prioritized focus each week. I sometimes have a tendency to overwhelm an individual week with more than I can actually get done and that’s a recipe for neglecting the important stuff for the sake of the “urgent” stuff. Think about it. If we don’t have work goals and relationship goals each week then our weeks take on a life of their own and begin to dictate our schedule. Setting bite-size weekly goals are about aspiring to do significant work and having the grit to take charge of our weekly schedules. We must realize that though we may end a week feeling that we didn’t get it all done, we can’t let that spill over into working too much and stealing time from our key relationships. Don’t miss the simple, yet important, things that happen every week in the lives of those closest to us. I speak from some experience.

Something amazing happens when we become focused and not frenzied. The richness of the simple things in life start shining through. Wise people like my Grandma understand this. There’s immediate returns on resolving ourselves to be priority-driven, but the long range returns are priceless. The long term results craft our legacy. Legacy is birthed within the hearts of those that our lives touch. The principle of Fried Grits is this; A life well led is life that cultivates grace within the hearts those closest to it. Hearty investments made over time leave a mark. We just need to eat our grits one bite at a time.

My Plans vs Their Plans

One day while working in "cubicle hell," I found myself in a meeting after completing a project. It wasn't a bad meeting, he mainly gave me a minute of praise before discussing upcoming projects. While most of the meeting was forgettable. One thing that stuck in my head after we talked is when he said, "We've got plans for you."

After the discussion, that phrase stuck with me. For some us that means a promotion or a raise is in the works. But this time, It left me with doubt. How does he know that his plans are aligned with my plans?

It's tempting to go along with other people's plans for a while. And keep telling yourself that you are "buying time" till you find something better. However, years can pass and then one day you will look back and wonder, hey, what happened to my plans?

Now, I don't think that everyone toiling at a day job is unhappy. But I do think everyone has a dream, and if you aren't willing to turn your dream into a plan, someone else will come along to impose their own plans on you. The next time this happens, think carefully:

Southern Brands

Note: This is an old post I wrote and never posted for some odd reason. Maybe it was because I felt that there were too many opinions flying around at the time or that my gripe is more about Southern Streetwear. Anyway check it out. Let me know what you think.

Complex Magazine and Bobby Hundreds compiled a list of The 50 Greatest Streetwear Brands of all time. Well, I am not the list and neither is any other Southern based brand. Nor do I expect to be.

But one thing is clear. Southern Streetwear has lot more to do on our part.

I started Grits not only because I was tired of being a graphics monkey but also because the southern culture is so under represented in this arena. After years of buying shoes and limited apparel from all corners of the planet. I grew little disgruntled over the fact that so many bought brands that didn't represent where they lived. Instead of a diet of based on Southern culture our consist of New York, LA and Japan.

So will it does hurt that not one Southern brand was listed but truthfully. Neither one of us are there yet.

But on the upside I believe that we hold the torch. Much like Southern Hip hop was in the 90's, southern streetwear created our own "Chitlin Circuit" and are playing by our own rules.

So when I read the article I was not surprised but neither should they when we are NOT welcoming them with open arms. Southern streetwear culture in general has always been undervalued by attention but has always been a profit center for our neighbors. My feeling is that we should support the community at large but more importantly support our own local and regional independent culture. And not be so quick to allow anyone to come and take advantage just because they are "popular."

Side note: It should also be noted that I’m not only just a fan of The Hundreds as a brand but a lot of others too. But when all is said and done my heart still lies with my Southern roots.

If you’re going to be successful...

I’m not sharing this video because of the NFL or because of the athlete. I’m sharing this because of the important message related directly to success and finding it. You’ve heard it before: If you want to be on the same level as the people that you look up to, you’ll need to work really, really hard. The secrets to success are revealed through hard work.

If you’re going to be successful you’ve got to be willing to give up sleep.

This does not mean do not sleep. However, it does mean you need to prioritize. It is a metaphor for certain things in life that you do that can and quite possibly, need to be sacrificed.

I know some of y'all been wondering whats happening with Grits. Its been a minute because I need to learn balance between work and family. Sometimes I am guilty of putting work above the latter. In order to balance everything, I took a small hiatus to search out new ideas and relax a bit. And I must say it was a breathe of fresh air! During this time I had a couple of epiphanys.

One of those brilliant ideas resulted in getting married to Toya Bee. (Some may have seen her helping at the booth at Kixpo or H-town Sneaker Summit.) The others are secret for now and they will soon manifest this fall.

Anyway, anytime is a a good time think about ones work/life balance. To find our purpose in life.

Many people work crazy hours to fill a void in their life. Some are just so driven and excited about what they do everyday that they cannot think of anything else.

For those, the old saying "Work's only Work, if you'd rather be doing something else", applies.

Either way, as we get older, it seems we come to appreciate that there is something to finding that balance, and everyone's balance is different, some it's 10/90, others it might be 90/10, but one of the keys to happiness is finding yours. For those of us who will be grinding over the next couple of months, make sure that you use that time well - there's no point of just going through the motions.

Anyway, I'm sorry for the radio silence and for neglecting this here blog which I know loyal fans of Grits enjoy and visit frequently.

Word Play

The best working definition of creative I have is “When work and play become the same thing”. When that happens, you’re in flow. When you’re in flow, things are created.

Perhaps there are better definitions of “creative” out there. Does it matter? Not really.

What matters is that you find your own definition.

At the last event that we attended, I came to realization that a lot of people are motivated to pursue their passion but they always have a "BUT." Then they go on to give me all the excuses in the world for why they cant start right now.

Most of the conversation boil down to us living our lives out of the fear of what other people think of us. Or waiting for someone to give us a permission slip that tells us it's OK to start.

Your ideals and value are your own, and no one could or should ever try to tell you what to do. Some of the most important ideas in life may seem quite unrealistic, but what would you rather do -- live like everyone else?

One of my goals with the Grits blog is to help you challenge the status quo, live life on your own terms, and change the world.

Currently, I'm running with the thought that, an idea is not something you HAVE, an idea is something you DO.

Ideas are cool, but without any action to follow, they’re useless. Ideas don’t exist in a vacuum.

Nobody reading this, including me, wants to spend their entire life, sitting on their desk, thinking big thoughts but actually doing nothing. Some of the most important ideas in our life may seem unrealistic, but what would you rather do -- live like everyone else?

STRATEGY VS. TACTICS

I recently read The War of Art, which I loved, by the way. (#Cosign). In the book, Steven Pressfield said, "Everyone knows my tactics, but no one knows my strategy." I've noticed that if you hustle hard enough, people will eventually copy your tactics. And, it's inevitable, when something works people will copy. Too bad for them, because they’ll only see a fraction of your success. This is another reason why you don’t need to worry much about competition.

For the entrepreneur, it doesn't matter when people copy your tactics. "Why," you ask? Because, they do so without understanding the clear strategy.

Once you have a clear strategy, then you can go back to some of the tactics. Then, you can figure out what you’re doing and how to make it better, and you’ll see more of an impact. But, starting with the tactics is almost always a mistake.

So, when you take the time to create something remarkable, instead of just taking up space, focus on what's important for you and everything else will align itself properly.

On June 17th in Dallas, TX, we’ll be privileged to be a part of a great hip-hop event, The Calling, housing some of the most talented artists around the area, such as Sore Losers, A.Dd+, Head Krack, and more. If you guys know anything about Loyal K.N.G. then you’ll be familiar with our love for hip-hop duo, Sore Losers (Freeloader Mixtape) and A.Dd+ (When Pigs Fly). These guys are hands down some of the most talented artists to come out of Dallas, and they are truly strong representatives of the hip-hop culture here in Texas. Good Enough

I've always found myself in conversations with friends and family about their jobs. And as much as they don't like their jobs, the conversation ends with;

"I shouldn't complain, because everyone tells me how good I have it. Lots of other people have been laid off or can't find a job in the first place. Besides, I have good benefits here."

Okaaayyyy...... yes you should be be happy for a job let alone a good job and others do have it hard. But, just because you have a good job or work at a good company, doesn't mean it's good for you. In fact, if you're constantly daydreaming of something else, having a good job can be dangerous. A lot of time a "good job" that you don't like can keep you from a big life.

What makes sense today, doesn't necessarily mean it will make sense on another; a job full of promise at one time can lose its luster. In these situations, pretending its "all good" is usually the wrong answer. If you're frustrated, it's time to make a change. Even if it's a good company or organization that has treated you well, you're not helping them by giving less than your best.

Aside from remaining stagnant and dragging along, you will find yourself in a good job that no longer meets your needs, there can only be two options:

1. Look for a way to bring the joy back to the good job.
2. Look for a way to say goodbye to the good job.

You might think that leaving is hard (and it will be). It's always easier to leave if it were a bad job. Then the situation would become urgent and you'd do everything you could to get out as soon as possible. But, because it's good enough, you stick around.

That's why, one way or another, something has to change.

So ask yourself

Have you ever found yourself doing something you don't like or even hate?

Taking Leaps

Over the past couple of months I've been all over Texas and back again. The bad part is the long drive. But, what makes everything worth it is meeting fans and friends alike, since a lot of my friends have clothing lines and we all have similar aspirations. It occurred to me that most of my friends and myself (and some of you out there) chose a harder path than we could have gotten away with.

It was tough at first, but it seems that it eventually paid off, or for some, likely to do so in the the future. Even though we have no guarantees, we knew what we were doing when we made the choice. And so we went for it. We ignored family and friends, followed our hearts and we had no regrets. We took that leap and I'm glad we did.

We challenge the status quo, live life on our own terms and leap when others are too afraid to do the same.

Digging for memorabilia and products from yesteryear is something I love to do. Whether I am at a garage sale, flea markets or on Ebay. I’m almost always drawn to the type of crap that captures the illustrative look and feel of the 50’s or early 60’s and 70's typography ….I love anything with a cartoon art vibe…jazz album covers, shot glasses, books, figurines….you name it! Anyway I struck gold on this one, a vintage 90's Popeye and Betty Boop "Thug Out" tee. What else can I say? Check out the pics for yourself.

Here is a few pics from my recent travels to San Antonio, During this trip I was able to relax and catch up with some friends and family. While on the Riverwalk, one of my good friends got us to try a place called Boudro's on the Riverwalk. And all I got to say, is that you really have to try to the grits. Pepper Jack Grits to be exact.

We went up to Dallas for my homie, Ha's release party for his brand, Fur Face Boy. It always seems like Fur Face Boy does a party everybody comes out of the wood works. So pretty much all of the most notable brands were there, like Good Child, Loyal KNG, Remix Label, Fresh Kaufee, Unkommon Kolor and newcomer Sleepy Dan.

To sum it up It was all good times, good music and good people.

Over the last month or two we've been running around so much that by the time you stop to take a breather you realize that a whole lot has happened. I love books and I love reading and collecting books. Especially Mad and Cracked magazines. While most young boys started drawing because of comics, I started because Mad and Cracked. As a kid, I would read it from cover to cover and try to imitate the drawings of Don Martin, Jack Davis, Al Jaffe and so much more. The contents was always intoxicating and subversive. It had no respect for anybody or anything- including itself.

So when I just scored a good deal of some magazines this weekend you can see why "I'm good." Now I just need the MAD board game.

One of my friends told to watch a interview with Will Smith and it totally I caught me by surprise. Naively, I thought it would be about his film career but it totally inspired me.

Its time to make a choice

In the interview, Will talks about being happy to “Die on the treadmill” and that got me thinking.

He explained how he will “out work” anyone and will not give up on his goal or die trying. And that got me thinking about the millions of people around the world who will end up dying in their work cubicle (well not literally but certainly in spirit) because they are not prepared to take that leap and get off of the “wrong” treadmill.

Its time to make a choice

You see, I believe he left out a vital ingredient:

See in life, we are all on a treadmill. Everyday people endure the daily grind and don't not give up on their dream. They go the extra mile. They do more than what's required... But what if they’re on the wrong treadmill?

So, What if you come up against a "Will Smith" on your treadmill? What if he or she will either die or beat you?

What if you’re fighting a losing battle? If it’s too much of a struggle you might be on the wrong treadmill. Maybe you should be going with the flow and not fighting against it.

The right thing and get off the wrong treadmill before it’s too late.

Start creating the life you want and follow your passion. Stopping swimming upstream and get in the flow because…

While we were in San Antonio for Sneaks Up 5, I couldn't resist stopping by Lulu's Bakery & Cafe first. This place in the epitome of a "Greasy Spoon" diner. And if it were any diner that understood the "Texas does it BIG." motto, Lulu's would win 1st place with their huge 3lb Cinnamon roll, Yes I did say 3lbs!!

Now to the chicken fried steak... Your eyes will likely gorge at the size of the chicken-fried steak as you notice other diners receiving their smoking hot dishes. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT make my mistake and look longingly and stir up your appetite before receiving your steak. It looked and smelled so delicious, I couldn't help it. I ate my whole steak. That was an unfortunate decision, as it was larger than my stomach was capable of handling, and I could feel those final pieces shoving its way into my gut. Every bite is delicious, but the afterwards I feel unhealthy, like it washed my stomach of every piece of salad or spinach that might have helped clean it and replaced it with chicken-fried batter.

It was the best experience post-meal. but Would I do it again? Almost definitely.

P.S. Some people have pointed out that the restaurant is old, run down, etc. Yes, it's a greasy spoon southern cafe. The good ones usually are. Did you really expect something different?

This week has been a crazy last week with all the releases. That I almost forgot about Sneaks Up 5. Considering that we were late getting there. (Side Note: I believe that we broke the record for "Fastest Driving Time" from Houston to San Antonio: 2 hours 5min #theflash.) Looking back is a crazy feeling. These days I’m deep in emails every morning and the schedule never seems to get any more clearer. Just one more meeting followed by one by more deadlines. So when you get a chance to stop in the middle of it all, look back and what you’ve done and take stock of the progress, it’s pretty wild.

Anyway I been slacking on the updates I admit but it's never without a good reason. Nitty Gritty series and other collabs and surprise are coming soon.... real soon. :)

Food For Thought: Relationships

A couple of years ago, long before Grits, in a galaxy far far away, I was in a relationship. Actually, my longest to date. Well to make a long story short, it went sour and we broke up. Honestly, looking back, I couldn't been happier about the way things turned out. I don't think I would've put as much energy into Grits if I still was in that relationship.

So, by now you are wondering where I am going with this. Well, I'm just tired of seeing people stay in relationships for the wrong reason ... Settling for less, just because they’re afraid they won't find another person. If this is you ... If you’re not fully happy, feeling incomplete, finding yourself checking in a bazillion times a day, because of trust issues, then do something about it. Some people get so caught up in a relationship that they half-ass their art, their dreams, and eventually their life.

In my opinion, the smartest thing to do is to make sure you build a strong foundation for your life before taking on the responsibility of a relationship. It’s not fair to your lover or friend and it’s not fair for you.

Since today is the start of Black History Month, I figured I would give some time to the greatest who ever did it, Muhammad Ali.

Ali was considered one of the "The Greatest" athletes of all time because he wasn't afraid of challenge. You knew that everything he did he was 'all in'. His confidence would bleed through every word he spoke. And his competitors knew it. Some people thought of his bravado as arrogance, but I viewed him as someone with a lot of faith. I am not talking about faith in the sense of religion. But someone with faith in himself.

Do you have faith in yourself?

Do you have as much confidence in your own abilities and 'follow through' to call your own victories?

Muhammad Ali said, "it's hard to beat a guy when he's got his mind made up that he's going to win."

Faith is long term. Don’t forget it. You’re in it for the long haul. Temptation to quit, throw in the towel, or even just lay against the ropes will always be there. But those that persevere will be handsomely rewarded.

Stadium Status: Htown Sneaker Summit Recap

The H-Town Sneaker Summit was pretty crazy this year. It seemed as if the whole city came out to bare witness to the super-sizing of what was already the regions largest summit. There were plenty of people, dozens of dope brands and a surplus of sneakers. Ron Grits and I held down the Grits booth while having a lot of fun and capturing a few pictures for your viewing enjoyment. Excuse the blurriness of some snaps shots, as I neglected to give Ron a tutorial. Never the less the good times and success of the event are clear. Tilt and squint.

Most of our lives everyone has always tried to fit each of us into a “box”, very similarly dimensioned, homogenized boxes at that. Telling us what to do and how to do it. Its funny to me that despite our varying interests, talents and gifts how we are all taught one size fits all. Ya know “go to college and get a ‘stable’ job and live ‘happily ever after’.”

Then somewhere along the way in this “pursuit of happiness” you realize that the ‘fit’ isn’t quite tailored to fit you, at all. College didn’t feel right or that “dream job” turned out to be the most unfulfilling thing in your life.

And then it happens. The moment you decide to let the waist out on your stifling Dockers and do something different. Your own way. And finding that is a whole ‘nother obstacle in itself.

Most of the time the obvious way around an obstacle isn't necessarily the only way. Looking for another option is part of the “Ramp Up.” When we “Ramp Up,” we achieve the same goals as anyone else, but through a different method. It works in education, career, personal finance, social causes, politics, relationships, etc.

Now when you “Ramp Up” there will be people that feel that going outside textbook defined strategy is cheating. You will here the “hate” when you succeed without the struggle. It's not fair to adapt to your surroundings or find a creative solution -- and it's not fair to create an entirely new playbook, because that throws the existing one into chaos.

It's only natural that some people feel this way. If you spend your whole life taking the long road, of course you'll be resentful when someone finds a shortcut.

But some rules were made to be broken, and other rules can be bended. In both cases there is almost always more than one way to accomplish something.

Its that time of the year again and the Htown Sneaker Summit is quickly approaching. This year its going to be at the Toyota Center! So you know we will be there in full effect. If you don't know about it, in a nutshell, the H-Town Sneaker Summit is the largest and longest running event of its kind in the entire Southwest where Sneaker Enthusiasts from all walks of life gather to discuss sneakers & fashion in a huge party atmosphere! To kick the new year off right we at Grits Apparel are doing what we do best, an exclusive shirt release. This time we're going intrastate, collaborating with fellow Texas brand, Complete Clothing out of Austin. The Greasy Spoon tee is an ode to the local restaurants that we frequent so much, for the authentic taste of Texas. What better place but to do that than in Austin? Where the local flavor is always exciting.

Not much for resolutions, I am however into making better habits. So throughout 2011 Grits will be habitually adding more seasoning to the pot, spicing stuff up and bringing even more to the table. I loathe sensible. We are all taught from an early age to be practical and sensible, which will lead to a safe existence , which is apparently the underlying "American Dream". But for me practical has always equaled average, and sensibility leads to a stepford life of 9-5 monotony.

No one who ever did anything up-roaringly remarkable got there by thinking, "I should probably be more levelheaded, practical & realistic. Yes, that will surely launch me straight to success."

You know what level-headed, practical, painstakingly realistic people... " The Average" do?

They wait in silence hoping that they would be "discovered." They suffer as the result of their own philosophies and fears, never conscious of the fact that it is their very own sword that they are impaling themselves upon.

• The "average" walk around the world wishing they could have just had some more guts.
• The "level-headed" wish they could have just taken that one risk.
• The "realistic" wish they could have just dreamed a little bigger.

And then there is YOU, who knows better.

For all those who believe in "No Grits No Glory" ... This is for you.

When pursuing any love, their will always be Resistance. It can manifest itself in you or in other people. It is always most difficult to see it in yourself, but outside "Resistance” is REAL and should never be taken lightly. See, when you pursue your passion, the world will react differently toward you.

If you are confident, they will say you are arrogant.

If you are deliberate, they will say you are too sure of yourself.

If you have a sense of purpose, they will say you are full of it.

If you know who you are, they will ask, "Who are you, anyway?"

If you believe in compassion, they will say you are naïve.

If you are a dreamer, they will say "Join the real world."

If you are a rebel, they will try to shut you down.

And they will tell you to slow down and be patient. Be safe.

And for a moment you will believe what your " friends" will tell you, but something is different this time. You can’t swallow it. The pill won’t go down. Then you will hear a small voice tell you what you already knew...

They are jealous, because they want what you have.

They are afraid of change, even as they crave it.

They are projecting their own regret into resentment of you.

It's not all bad news: some of them will sort themselves out and some will end up joining you. Because you are a good person and have had plenty of false starts of your own, you'll understand and welcome them warmly. We've missed you! You’ll say. It's about time you made it.

Especially as it relates to [un]employment rates.There is now an excess of resources, resumes and people competing for jobs. So my questions is, how many of us are truly irreplaceable? And I am not just referring to irreplaceability to our employers, but in our lives. At any given moment there are hundreds or evens thousands of people that can do what we do, how we do, as well as... or even better. So what's your unique selling point, competitive advantage or super power?

In a world where mediocrity once held a long reign. (Get this degree, climb that ladder, buy more "stuff".) We are now being shown that being average actually puts you at a disadvantage in life. A goal of life must be to find your passion and do it uniquely and exquisitely and do it in a way that keeps you from being lost in the sea of mediocrity.

Make Art Make Love

I ran in to some old friends a few weeks back. They told me how much they loved the blog, but one was a little confused as to why I choose to use the word passion as a substitute for the word art. My answer was, "Everyone doesn't understand art but everyone understands passion."

With that being said, anyone who has made art and/or has had the good fortune of making love knows why passion is paramount.
Making art is sexy. Making art passionately is even sexier.

A little over a year ago I ended a lengthy relationship. While there were many reasons that ultimately led to "the break-up", one in particular always picked at me slowly over the years; I always felt that I was being pushed to be mediocre. To be like everyone else.

It has always bothered me how school and societal standard has groomed us to be average, to be like everyone else. Belong. Fit in. Conform. I can't deny that there have been times I did just that, followed suit to get by from job to job, get through one class to the next. Ironically even when I was excelling by these standards and "performing well", an undeniable scent of the status quo covered me. And I hated the smell.

Every job everyone commended me on was actually the subconscious bane of my existence. I wanted out. Internally I was tired of my parents, friends, "mentors", even my then girlfriend telling me "to be realistic" and do something that was deemed as "safe." Nonetheless I accepted it. The mediocrity. In my job, relationships and in my life. It wasn't until after my ex and I broke up that I began to ask myself one question:

What do you really want to get out of life?

For me it was simply to create. To push forward with my art. To design cool shirts. No matter how menial that may have sounded to some, perhaps even most, I simply wanted to make cool shirts. And the first step towards that realization was to stop being mediocre; stop being realistic. In fact it was time to "be unrealistic" and follow my passion.

Every person who tells you to "be realistic" is asking you to be mediocre. They are suggesting you compromise your ideas and ideals in the name of security. But, our mantra at Grits Apparel is No Grits No Glory; We focus on the way things could be rather than the way things were. Some of the best ideas may seem unrealistic, but what would you rather do?... live like everyone else?

Do something.

We either get paid by the hour, week, month or even the year. I've yet to cash all those checks. Nor do I want to.

After working enough jobs you begin to realize that payroll will nearly never pay you your worth. I guess that's why I initially started to freelance and what ultimately led to my entrepreneurialism. I want to be paid for the value I create, not for how much time I spend at a desk, on the clock, nor how many meetings I doodle through.

If your current situation is filled with office politics and 9-5 redundancy, and you don't like it... it doesn't have to be that way.Your life does not want you to hate it. Your life wants to be loved.

But only you can do something about that.

One year ago we started this journey and it's been one helluva ride. We've made a lot friends, extended family and some haters. Nevertheless, through all the obstacles we faced this year we wouldn't have made it this far without you.

Jimmy Houston

This past weekend was Houston's 2010 Art Crawl. For some who don't know exactly what that is, Art Crawl is a yearly event in Houston's Downtown and Warehouse districts, where more than 100 artists open their working art studios, exhibitions and sometimes even live in spaces to the public. Art Crawl is intended to give a little insight to the public about the contemporary art being created right here in Houston.

I hate to say that the first couple of spaces I saw were just so/so. That is until I ran into Jimmy Houston. [Yup that's his real name.] Anyway, Jimmy's paintings consist mostly of characters reminiscent of the cool illustrations and cartoons of the 30's/40's. But don't merely take my word for it. Shoot over to his blog and see for yourself. In the mean time, us at the Grits Chatta Box will continue to stay on the lookout for more emerging Houston artists like JImmy, who's definitely servin up some goodstuff.

The Biggest Obstacle

The other day, after having a long conversation with some friends, I came to the realization that the main thing everyone has in common, is fear. I believe it is truly the only reason anyone doesn't reach their fullest potential in life.

I often hear people say that they want to start their own business, pursue a dream, follow their passion. If you want to start a business, you don't need a degree, venture capital, loans, business plan or other "essentials" that often become distractions and excuses. So what's really the problem?

Far more than anything else, fear is the main obstacle that holds us back. So instead of pretending to be fearless, while buckling beneath the surface, learn to work it. Believe me it will never go away, but you can avoid letting fear make decisions for you.

On the ride back from Stitched Up, I couldn't help but think about how much fun we had and I realized that this doesn't have to stop. You don't have to return to endless droning about nothing in your career. Well you can. But, all it's good for is making your boss rich, but not much else.

See, most people live check to check. Here is an idea. Instead of living check to check, how about adventure to adventure. I figured if you can’t live life like an adventure, it’s not worth doing.

So, what's my next adventure? I don't know yet. But, I know Grits is about to serve some goodstuff real soon.
